Defining a Clinical Trial

A clinical trial is a research study in which people volunteer to test new medications or treatments following a specific protocol. These clinical trials are required by the FDA to show the new medications are safe and effective in humans. These studies are necessary to develop new treatments and improve on existing treatments for different diseases.

Clinical trials show us which new medications are effective and which ones are not before they can be available.

The outcomes of these studies provide the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) with information that is used in the decision making process for approving new treatments and medications.
